FAQ

Q: What is it?

A: A secure, reliable, scalable and traceable solution that simplifies and automates data transfer from different data sources to Amazon Web Services cloud-native services (e.g., Amazon S3, Amazon ECR and etc).

Q: What are the user scenarios?

A: Customers who need to transfer data from different sources to Amazon Web Services , including:

(1) Transfer Amazon S3 objects between Amazon Web Services regions.

(2) Transfer data from other cloud providers' object storage services (including Alibaba Cloud OSS, Tencent COS, Qiniu Kodo, and other Amazon S3 Compatible Cloud Storage) to Amazon S3.

(3) Transfer Amazon ECR Images between Amazon Web Services regions.

(4) Transfer container images from public container registry (e.g., Docker Hub, Google gcr.io, Red Hat Quay.io) to Amazon ECR.

Q: How does it work?

A: This solution offers a centralized web portal to manage many types of transfer tasks. When a task is created via web portal, Lambda function will trigger CloudFormation to deploy specific component to transfer that particular type of data.

Q: What customer experience is like?

A: This solution provides a unified user interface that allows customers easily manage different types of data transfer tasks in a centralized place. Users can also run each transfer plugin independently.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: It is free to use this solution. Users are charged based on the usage of Amazon Web Services Services.

Q: How do I get started with it?

A: You can deploy the solution by clicking the launch button. Then please follow the Deployment Guide to get started.

Q: How much development effort needed to use it?

A: This solution is ready to use once deployed, there is no development effort needed to use it. Since this is an open-source solution, you can do your own customization based on the source code in GitHub, if the out-of-the-box features don’t meet your requirement.

Q: Can I deploy the solution in any Amazon Web Services Region?

A: Yes, this solution can be deployed in any Amazon Web Services regions.

If you want to deploy the web portal in Amazon Web Services (Beijing) Region operated by Sinnet and Amazon Web Services (Ningxia) Region operated by NWCD, you need to have

  1. An ICP licensed domain. It is not required, if you run the data transfer plugin directly.
  2. An OpenID Connect (OIDC) Provider, which is used for authentication and authorization.

Q: How can I monitor the progress of S3 data transfer?

A: This solution provides Amazon CloudWatch Dashboard for you to monitor the metrics and progress of S3 transfer tasks.

Q: What are the differences between Data Transfer Hub ECR transfer feature comparing with Amazon ECR Cross Region Replication feature?

A: They are mainly used for different purposes. Data Replication Hub ECR transfer feature helps customers to transfer container images from different sources (e.g., public container registry) into Amazon ECR and also supports replication between Amazon Web Services Global and China Regions. Both are not supported by Amazon ECR Cross Region Replication feature.
