Today, we announce the general availability of bandwidth reduction filtering for the AVC and HEVC encoders in AWS Elemental MediaConvert. The bandwidth reduction filter is a perceptual input preprocessing filter which removes temporal noise from video sources while minimizing impact on visual quality. The filter uses human vision system models to reduce imperceptible signals and temporal noise, which often originate from camera sensors.

With the release of the new bandwidth reduction filter, MediaConvert customers have more options to improve outputs from bitrate-constrained, low-, medium-, and high-fidelity video sources. Used in conjunction with Quality-Defined Variable Bitrate (QVBR) transcodes, this filter is designed to reduce video bitrate without impacting video quality. The bandwidth reduction filter can also be used with constant bitrate modes to increase perceived video quality. Source content with temporal noise, often found with video captured in low-light conditions using weak sensors, will see the greatest reduction in bitrate when using the filter. This makes the bandwidth reduction filter especially relevant for user-generated content captured on mobile devices.

Video passthrough is available in the Amazon Web Services China (Ningxia) Region, operated by NWCD.
