We are making a change to how we present CloudWatch charges in your Amazon Web Services bill and Cost and Usage Reports, to make it easy for you to understand your monthly CloudWatch spend. These changes will be effective in all Amazon Web Services Regions, including BJS operated by Sinnet, beginning July 2017.
Today, charges for your use of CloudWatch are split under two different sections in your Amazon Web Services Cost and Usage reports. For historical reasons, charges for CloudWatch Alarms, CloudWatch Metrics, and CloudWatch API usage are reported under the “Elastic Compute Cloud” (EC2) detail section of your bill, while charges for CloudWatch Logs and CloudWatch Dashboards are reported under the “CloudWatch” detail section.
Many of you have told us that having CloudWatch charges split under two different sections of your bill makes it difficult to understand your monitoring charges. Based on this feedback, we will move the charges for CloudWatch Metrics, CloudWatch Alarms, and CloudWatch API usage from the “EC2” section of your bill to the “CloudWatch” section, effectively bringing together all of your CloudWatch monitoring charges under the “CloudWatch” section. In addition, in your detailed bill, you will now see charges for Metrics, Alarms, and API usage under “AmazonCloudWatch” ProductCode and “AmazonCloudWatch” ProductName, instead of under “AmazonEC2” ProductCode and “Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud” ProductName.
Your total Amazon Web Services bill amount will not change. Your bill will simply now show charges for CloudWatch under a single section.
There is a Billing Metric in CloudWatch named “Estimated Charges” that can be viewed as Total Estimated Charge or broken down By Service. The “Total Estimated Charge” metric will not change. However, the “EstimatedCharges” metric broken down by Service will change for dimension ServiceName equal to “AmazonEC2” and dimension ServiceName equal to “AmazonCloudWatch”.
If you have an alarm for your “EstimatedCharges” metric for ServiceName “AmazonCloudWatch” or for ServiceName “AmazonEC2”, consider adjusting the thresholds based on the consolidated charges you expect.
