Amazon EC2 R7g Instances

A price performance choice for memory-intensive workloads in Amazon EC2

Overview

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) R7g instances, powered by the latest generation Amazon Graviton3 processors, provide the a price performance choice in Amazon EC2 for memory-intensive workloads. R7g instances are ideal for memory-intensive workloads such as open-source databases, in-memory caches, and real-time big data analytics. They offer up to 25% better performance over the sixth-generation Amazon Graviton2-based R6g instances. R7g instances feature Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) memory, which provides 50% higher memory bandwidth compared to DDR4 memory to enable high-speed access to data in memory.

R7g instances are available with a local NVMe-based SSD block-level storage option (R7gd) for applications that need high-speed, low latency storage. R7gd instances have up to 45% better real-time NVMe storage performance than comparable Graviton2-based instances.

Benefits

A price performance choice for memory-intensive workloads in Amazon EC2

R7g instances deliver up to 25% better performance over Graviton2-based R6g. They are ideal for memory-intensive applications, such as open-source databases, in-memory caches, and real-time big data analytics.

Enhanced security and maximized resource efficiency

R7g instances are built on the Amazon Nitro System. The Amazon Nitro System is a combination of dedicated hardware and a lightweight hypervisor that delivers isolated multi-tenancy, private networking, and fast local storage. Amazon Graviton3 processors offer enhanced security with always-on memory encryption, dedicated caches for every vCPU, and support for pointer authentication. These instances also support encrypted Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) volumes by default.

Extensive software support

Amazon Graviton-based instances are supported by many Linux operating systems, including Amazon Linux 2, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE, and Ubuntu. Many popular applications and services for security, monitoring and management, containers, and continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) from Amazon Web Services and software partners also support Amazon Graviton-based instances.

Features

Powered by Amazon Graviton3 processors

Amazon Graviton3 is the latest generation of Amazon-designed Arm-based processors that provide a price performance choice for workloads in Amazon EC2. Amazon Graviton3 processors deliver up to 25% better compute performance, up to 2x higher floating-point performance, and up to 2x faster cryptographic workload performance compared to Amazon Graviton2 processors. Additionally, Graviton3 processors deliver up to 3x better performance compared to Graviton2 processors for ML workloads, including support for bfloat16.

High-performance interfaces

R7g instances use leading edge DDR5 memory to provide 50% higher bandwidth compared to R6g. R7g instances are also available with local instance storage option (R7gd). R7g instances have support for Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) in the 16xlarge and bare-metal sizes. R7gd have EFA support in the 16xlarge size.

Built on the Amazon Nitro System

The Amazon Nitro System is a rich collection of building blocks that offloads many of the traditional virtualization functions to dedicated hardware and software. It delivers high performance, high availability, and high security, reducing virtualization overhead.
